We are approaching the long-awaited spring and with it comes Semana Santa celebrations or Easter. In Mallorca, these celebrations, as well as a religious connotation stand out as being a tradition with a strong popular and familiar character.

The city of celebrates Easter this year with a record of participation in the streets of Palma Old Town . In the processions of Palma 33 brotherhoods that will show the public 37 steps from the “Viernes de Dolores”, March 18, the procession of the banners is celebrated until “Viernes Santo”, March 25, and the procession of the “Santo Entierro” involved.
Of all of them, and following the tradition, the most awaited and with more participation procession is the “Santo Cristo de la Sangre” on Holy Thursday, which begins at the Plaza del Hospital de Palma at 19:00 and ends at dawn in Cathedral. The following Easter Sunday the traditional festive day of Sunday Angel is held at the Bellver Castle.

Pollença , in northern Mallorca, is one of the towns in which most intensely live Easter. The most emotional moment happens on Holy Friday when take place the known as “Davallament” considered tourist attractions since 1968. The celebration consists in unpinning Jesus in the oratory of Calvary (located at the end of a long stone path 365 steps, flanked by solemn cypresses on the outskirts of the village) and lower it to the square.

At Easter is enjoyed in Mallorca a typical cuisine that includes “panades” (pastel single meat filling, meat and peas with a little spicy sausage, bacon or fish), “robiols” (pasties baked fresh pasta and stuffed angel hair, cottage cheese, jam flavors, quince, chocolate, custard, etc.) and “crespells” (cakes made of the same sweet paste robiols but unfilled and with different forms, the most typical rounded, in star shape, etc.) Although the tradition is to make these tasty treats with family or friends, in Mallorca there are bakeries and specialty bakeries that offer them, in Palma can find them in the emblematic Forn de la Pau, Horno del Santo Cristo or Forn de la Glòria.
